NAR, NAC, and CNA may sound like three separate credentials. In Washington, they do not mean the same thing. An NAR is registered but not certified. An NAC has completed the certification process. CNA is the common name many employers use for an NAC.
What Is an NAR in Washington?
NAR means Nursing Assistant-Registered. Washington does not require formal nursing assistant training before a person applies for this registration.
An NAR can provide basic care under the direction of a licensed nurse. However, the allowed duties and employment requirements depend on the care setting. Registration alone does not show that the person completed an approved program or passed the state competency exam.
According to the Washington State Board of Nursing’s NAR and NAC comparison, an NAR who works in a nursing home must complete approved training and the certification process within the required four-month period.
What Is an NAC?
NAC means Nursing Assistant-Certified. This is Washington’s official title for a nursing assistant who has met the state’s certification requirements.
Most applicants complete a state-approved CNA training program. They must then pass both parts of the nursing assistant exam. One part tests knowledge. The other tests hands-on skills.

Is a CNA Different From an NAC?
In Washington, CNA is not a third credential. CNA means Certified Nursing Assistant. Employers, schools, and job websites often use this familiar term.
Washington uses Nursing Assistant-Certified, or NAC, as the official credential name. Therefore, a job advertisement asking for a Washington CNA will usually mean an active NAC credential.
Which Credential Should You Choose?
An NAR may help someone begin working in an approved setting while completing the required path. An NAC is normally the better goal for a long-term nursing assistant career because it confirms that the person has met Washington’s training and testing standards.
