CNA Clinical Training in Washington: What to Expect
CNA clinical training in Washington gives students real care experience before certification. State rules require 40 clinical hours. Clinical training is given in a care facility under instructor supervision and cannot be completed fully online. Students practice CNA duties while learning respectful care.
How Many Clinical Hours Are Required?
Washington requires at least 108 training hours:
- 35 hours of classroom theory,
- 33 hours of skills lab,
- and 40 hours of clinical training.
Facility orientation does not count as clinical time. See WAC 246-841A-440 for the requirements.

Where Do CNA Clinicals Take Place?
Clinical training takes place in a nursing home or care facility. An approved instructor stays on-site to teach, supervise, and evaluate students. Washington allows no more than ten students per clinical instructor.
Students must first perform each skill correctly for an instructor. They may then use that skill while caring for a resident.
Which Skills Will You Practice?
Activities depend on the clinical plan and residents’ needs. Common CNA clinical skills include:
- Taking and recording vital signs
- Helping with bathing, dressing and grooming
- Moving and positioning residents safely
- Following infection-control procedures
- Observing and reporting changes
- Protecting privacy, comfort and dignity

- Student name tag.

- TB test results,
- Immunization records,
