Is Online CPR Certification Accepted in Washington State?

Online CPR certification may be accepted in Washington, but the course must meet the requirements of your job or training program. Online lessons alone may not be enough. Before paying, check the required course name, card provider, and hands-on assessment. Blended training includes both online learning and practical skills.

Online, Blended, and Classroom CPR Courses

The word “online” can describe different types of training. Read the course details carefully.

  • Online-only: You study and answer questions online, without an in-person skills session.
  • Blended: You complete online lessons and a separate hands-on session.
  • Classroom: You attend lessons and practise skills in person.

These formats are not always interchangeable. A certificate showing that you watched lessons does not necessarily prove you can perform CPR.

What Does the American Heart Association Require?

For AHA courses that teach physical skills such as CPR, you must complete a hands-on skills session to receive the course completion card. This includes practice and testing.

The AHA training FAQs explain that blended CPR learning combines online study with an in-person skills session. Completing only the online portion does not complete the full course.

Also, check the course type. A job asking for Basic Life Support, or BLS, may not accept a general CPR course. AHA BLS courses do not include first aid.

What Should Washington Caregivers Check?

Requirements depend on your role and workplace. Our guide to who needs CPR and first aid certification in Washington explains the groups that may need training.

There are also separate rules for continuing education. According to DSHS guidance on CPR and first-aid continuing education, qualifying training may count for three CE hours. The class must meet OSHA standards and be taken in person. Online training certificates are not accepted for this CE purpose.

This specific CE rule does not mean every course containing online lessons is unacceptable for every Washington job.

Ask These Questions Before Booking CPR Course

Send your employer or training coordinator the course details and ask:

  • Which course and issuing organization do you accept?
  • Do I need first aid, BLS, or both?
  • Is adult training enough, or is pediatric training required?
  • What practical assessment must I complete?
  • When must I submit my completion card?

Keep their answer so you can compare it with the provider’s offer. If you already hold a card, check its expiry date using our CPR certification renewal guide.

Choose CPR Training You Can Use

Hands-on practice lets you ask questions and receive feedback. Reading our adult choking first-aid guide can support learning, but it does not replace practical training.
